According to a security researcher, the satellite systems used by the military, contain bugs. These are utilized in the aircraft and ships. In fact, these have the capability to allow the hackers to take a firm control over the systems. Moreover, a few of the bugs have the power to take the ownership of the satellite antenna with the motto to injure the operators and/or sabotage the equipment.
On the other hand, a few bugs may misguide the people regarding the proper location of the military forces in the crisis areas.
In response to the scenario, IOActive, which has identified the bugs, is putting its endeavor to strengthen the devices in order to deplete the vulnerability of attacks.
One of the spokesperson from IOActive, Ruben Santamarta, stated that the outcomes of the discovered susceptibilities are fatal. The details of the report will be revealed at the security conference, Black Hat, in Las Vegas.
It was also found that a few of the bugs needed an attacker present on the flight to be able to access it. However, numerous other vulnerable equipment pieces were found that can be seamlessly accessed through the internet.
In the case of the ships, the attackers could gain control over the receivers of the satellite in order to eavesdrop and damage the antenna. Ruben Santamarta was successful in gaining an access to the communication system of the satellites through the backdoors. The back doors were not installed maliciously but have been added at the time of development of software.
He stated that the devices are not even allowing updating, making it more vulnerable. Hence, he suggested replacing the current system with advanced equipment which will be impregnated with strong yet non-vulnerable codes. This will not only contribute to the seamless operation but will also restrict any form of malicious activities.
